The milepost is 09.02.2022. I admit to a feeling of excitement this morning. Lots of fun stuff this month that I’ve been waiting for. I’m going to make a lot of good memories in September. Can’t hope for more than that. Today is Bring Your Manners to Work Day, College Colors Day, National Blueberry Popsicle Day, National Doodle Day, National Food Bank Day, National Lazy Mom’s Day, Pierce Your Ears Day, Spalding Baseball Day, World Coconut Day, and National Chianti Day. Now let’s jump in the time machine and for a short ride. On this day in 1192 the Sultan Saladin and King Richard the Lionheart of England signed a treaty over Jerusalem to end the Third Crusade. On this day in 1666 the Great Fire of London began at 2 am in Puddling Lane and 80% of London was destroyed. This day in 1752 was the last Julian calendar day in Great Britain and the British colonies including America. To sync to the Gregorian calendar, 11 days were skipped, and the next date was September 14th. On this day in 1792 the September Massacre (French Revolution) took place in Paris when a mob killed 3 Roman Catholic bishops and more than 200 priests. On this day in 1898 the machine gun was 1st used in battle. On this day in 1930 the 1st non-stop airplane flight from Europe to the US took place. It was 37 hours long. On this day in 1935 the Labor Day hurricane made landfall in Florida killing 423 people. This was the strongest, most intense hurricane to ever make landfall. This is the day that J.R.R. Tolkien died in 1973. He said, “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Next is David Graeber (2020) who observed that “There seems a general rule that, the more obviously one’s work benefits other people, the less one is likely to be paid for it.” I’ll end with the Frederik Pohl (2013) who wrote wonderful Science Fiction. He said, “That’s what life is, just one learning experience after another, and when you’re through with all the learning experiences you graduate and what you get for a diploma is, you die.” The End. Abide.
