September 19, 2023. A few days ago, I mentioned that our Parrot Head Club was holding a golf tournament to benefit Alzheimer’s. We did and managed to raise $62,000 because a lot of people worked hard, and smart. Pretty cool. I’m proud to be associated with such a great organization. September 19 is Get Ready Day, IT Professionals Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day, National butterscotch Pudding Day, and Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day. Arrrrgh me mattie. Now some history: On this day in 1559 five Spanish ships sunk in a storm off Tampa and 600 sailors died. On this day in 1849 the 1st commercial laundry opened in Oakland, CA. On tis day in 1876 the carpet sweeper was patented by Melville Bissell of Grand Rapids, MI. On this day in 1893 New Zealand became the 1st country to grant all women the right to vote. On this day in 1940 a Nazi decree forbids gentile women to work in Jewish homes. On this day in 1941 Nazis force German Jews, 6-years and older, to wear Jewish stars. The population of Germany was around 87 million with only 215,000 Jews. That’s only a quarter of 1%. On this day in 1952 the “Adventures of Superman” premiered. On this day in 1959 Nikita Khrushchev was denied access to Disneyland. This is the day in 1970 that “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” premiered. This is the day in 1990 that my favorite gangster movie, “Goodfellas” premiered. The observations for today are provided by Dr. Seuss who said, “you have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” “Only you can control your future.” “From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.” “Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act.” I’ll end with my favorite quote from Dr. Seuss which I’ve used way, way, way to often recently: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Abide.
