We’re now in December 12th, 2019. Just another day? You can treat it as routine and let it pass slowly into history. I don’t plan to do that. I refuse to squander December 12th. I intend to make it a day I will remember for a long time. I’ve got a plan, or at least there is a plan. Making Christmas cookies. Lots of them. For the rest of you, it’s National 12-hour Fresh Breath Day, Festival of Unmentionable Thoughts, National Ambrosia Day, Gingerbread House Day, National Poinsettia Day and National Ding-A-Ling Day. I’ve never heard of the Festival of Unmentionable Thoughts but It sounds interesting. I’ve always wondered what people are thinking about. I’ll never know. Moving on: In 1800 Washington, D.C., established as the capital of the United States of America on this date. In 1870 Joseph Rainey (South Carolina) becomes 1st African American to serve in US House of Representatives. I looked up some of his quotes and they are too long for this post but after reading a few of them, it’s clear that he was a very bright and articulate person. In 1914 on this date, the largest one-day percentage drop in the history of Dow Jones Industrial Average, down 24.39%. In 1925 on this date, Arthur Heinman coins term “motel”; opens Motel Inn, San Luis Obispo. In 1949 the AL votes 7-1 rejecting legalizing the spitball. Finally, in 1965 on this date the Beatles’ held their last concert in Great Britain. This is the birthday (1863) of Edvard Munch who is the painter who did “The Scream”. I looked up his quotes and they were too dark to start today with. I’m thinking his most famous picture is a self portrait. This is also the day that the poet Robert Browning’s life ended. Much better quotes: “Come grow old with me, the best is yet to be”. “Perhaps one has to be very old before one learns to be amused rather than shocked.” I like that quote. I’ve learned that I can get mad about something or just laugh at it and move on. With that, I’ll start my very special, Christmas baking day. Abide
