Easter morning, April 4, 2021. This is the biggest Christian holiday of the year. If you’re not into religion, there’s always the Easter Bunny to fall back on. The origin of this egg laying hare is thought to be from German Lutherans in the 1700s. Make mine chocolate please? April 4th is Tell a Lie Day, International Carrot Day, National Cordon Bleu Day, National Baked Ham With Pineapple Day, Vitamin C Day and World Rat Day. Did you know that Rats giggle? Yep. They are much smarter and more social than we realize. I’ll pick the carrot as long as we make it into a cake. Now to history. On this day in 1687 King James II ordered his declaration of indulgence read in English churches. I did a bit of research. At this time it was a crime to not believe the teachings of the Church of England. The Declaration of Indulgence was an attempt to bring about religious freedom. On this day in 1887, Susanna Madora Salter became the 1st woman in the US elected to the position of mayor (Argonia Kansas). In 1896 the announcement of gold discovery in Yukon was made starting the Klondike Gold Rush which brought 100,000 prospectors to Alaska. Finally, this is the day in 1968 that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. He has so many powerful quotes. Here’s a couple: “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase” April 4th is also the day in 1841 that William Henry Harrison died after serving 41 days as the President. He said, “I believe that all the measures of the Government are directed to the purpose of making the rich richer and the poor poorer.” Not alot has changed between then and now it seems.
