It is now the 5th day of May in 2021. It’s Cinco de Mayo which commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. I often celebrated Cinco de Drinko in Detroit’s barrio in my working days. Tacos and plenty of cervezas. Yum! Today has a lot of interesting options. It’s Cartoonists Day, National Hoagie Day, Oyster Day and Totally Chipotle Day. The best hoagie I’ve found was in Atlantic City NJ at the White House Sub Shop. Makes me hungry just thinking about it. Moving on. This is the day in 1865 the first train robber took place in North Bend Ohio. On this day in 1877 that Sitting Bull led his band of Lakota into Canada to avoid harassment by the United States Army. This is the day remembered as the Panic of 1893. The Stock market crashed, 600 banks failed, 15,000 companies collapsed and unemployment soared to 25%. On this day in 1916, the US Marines invaded Dominican Republic and stayed until 1924. If you search on this event, it’s an interesting read. On this day in 1925 Dayton teacher John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution. Finally, this day in 1965 marks the first large-scale US Army ground units arrival in South Vietnam. This also happens to be the birthday of Søren Kierkegaard who was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet and social critic. He said, “Take a chance and you may lose. Take not a chance and you have lost already.” This is the day that Napoleon Bonaparte stopped living in 1821. He said, “The purpose of religion is to keep the poor from killing the rich” and “When people cease to complain, they cease to think.” If you search for his quotes, and there are hundreds, you will discover why he was a military genius. Enough for this day. I recommend tacos or a hoagie or some oysters. Above all, I recommend that you pursue happiness on this once in your life time event named May 5, 2021. Abide.
