August 8th, 2021, is finally here.  I’ve been waiting my whole life to reach this place in time/space as has everyone who happens to be alive today.  The tropical disturbances in the Atlantic are lined up like airplanes waiting to land at Orlando.  The pandemic continues to rage.  Sumter county Florida where I live has a vaccination rate of over 75%.  It should be at least 90%.  Today is Gay Uncles Day, International Cat Day, National CBD Day, National Melon Day, National Garage Sale Day, National Dollar Day, National Zucchini Day and National Frozen Custard Day which is my pick. Zucchini comes in as a close second. Now for some historical footnotes:  On this day in 1508, Juan Ponce de Leon established the first European settlement in Puerto Rico.  This date in 1786 that the US Congress unanimously chose the dollar as the monetary unit for the United States of America. On this day in 1898 Will Kellogg invented Corn Flakes. On this day in 1925 was the 1st national march of the Ku Klux Klan (between 25,000 and 40,000 marchers) in Washington, D.C. On this day in 1960 “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” hit #1. Today is Dustin Hoffman’s birthday (1937). Dustin said, “I decided to become an actor because I was failing in school and I needed the credits.” This is the day in 2017 that Glen Campbell stopped living at the age of 81. Glenn said, “it didn’t take me long to figure out that playing a guitar was a whole lot better than getting ahold of a hoe handle or chopping cotton.” I don’t think that either Dustin or Glenn had a plan.  Sometimes circumstances put us on the right path.  Enough for today.  Have an excellent August 8th.  Abide.
