05.05.2022. I’m sure it will be a fine day to be alive. I’ve reached the time in my life when I’ve got no big wins to go for, no lofty goals to achieve and no need to impress anyone. Instead of getting ready to step into the batter’s box, I simply watch from the shaded cheap seats and applaud others still in the game. Where did all the stress go? Don’t know and I don’t care. Life is great. Today is Cinco de Mayo, Cartoonists Day, National Hoagie Day, Oyster Day and Totally Chipotle Day. A fried oyster poor boy from New Orleans is in my future. Moving on. On this day in 1260 the Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan became ruler of the Mongol Empire. This is the day in 1865 the first train robber took place in North Bend Ohio. On this day in 1877 Sitting Bull led his band of Lakota into Canada to avoid harassment by the United States Army. This is the day remembered as the Panic of 1893. The Stock market crashed, 600 banks failed, 15,000 companies collapsed, and unemployment soared to 25%. Finally, this day in 1965 marks the first large-scale US Army ground force’s arrival in South Vietnam. Now let’s see who died on this date. Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821 at the age of 51. He said, “the purpose of religion is to keep the poor from killing the rich.” “History is a set of lies agreed upon” and “God is on the side with the best artillery.” Next the short story writer Bret Harte who died in 1902 at the age of 65. Bret said, “Never a tear bedims the eye that time and patience will not dry.” I’ll end with some advice from Karl Marx. Today is his birthday. Karl said, “Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. Everyone else is just passing through.” Abide.
