10.10.2022 is here. Another day for us to use in whatever way we see fit. Many of you are encumbered by work responsibilities. Since I’m retired, I’m not. I can do whatever I want to. I just need to avoid the consequences of doing something stupid. Life is good. Today is Hug a Drummer Day, Indigenous People’s Day, National Angel Food Cake Day, National Cake Decorating Day, National Handbag Day, National Ug-a-Kevin Day, National Kick Butt Day, National Love Your Hair Day, National Online Banking Day, Native American Day, National Walk to a Park Day, Squid and Cuttlefish Day, World Homeless Day, and World Day Against the Death Penalty. I’ll raise my glass to my Native American friends. Now some history: On this day in 1780 a hurricane kills between 20,000 and 30,000 in the Caribbean. This is the Atlantic’s deadliest recorded hurricane. On this day in 1845 the Naval School (now called the US Naval Academy) opened in Annapolis. On this day in 1889 Barnard College is founded in New York City after Columbia University refused to accept women. On this day in 1957 President Eisenhower apologized to the finance minister of Ghana after he was refused service in a restaurant in Dover, Delaware. In 1965 on this day the Supremes appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. This is the day in 1973 that Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned after pleading no contest to tax fraud. The first dead person today is the director, actor and screenwriter Orson Welles who died on this day in 1985. Orson said, “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” The next dead person for today is the actor, Christopher Reeve who was paralyzed in an accident. He said, “Pain is inevitable. Misery is a choice” and “I’m not living the life I thought I would lead, but it does have meaning and purpose. There is love, there is joy, there is laughter.” The last is the French philosopher Charles Fourier who died in 1837 and observed “It is known that the best nations have always been those which concede the greatest amount of liberty to women.” That quote sounds right and relevant. Have an excellent day. Abide.
