June 6th, 2022. Another present waiting to be unwrapped. Each day of life is a gift. The older I gets, the more I realizes how appropriate those metaphors are. Today we have a big list of celebratory events: Atheist Pride Day, Drive In Movie Day, National Yo-yo Day, National Pineapple Day, National Higher Education Day, National Hunger Awareness Day, National Churro Day, National Applesauce Cake Day and D Day. Now the history of this day. In 1391 the Catholics of Seville Spain, incited by Archdeacon Ferrand Martinez murdered 5,000 Jews who lived in Seville. Survivors were either converted or sold into slavery. On this day in 1844 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was formed in London. In 1882 the electric iron was patented. This day in 1896 Frank Samuelsen and George Harbo left NY harbor to row across the Atlantic. Their 55day record for rowing was not broken for 114 years. In 1939 on this day the ship MS St. Louis, carrying 907 Jewish refugees from Europe, was refused entry into America. On this day in 1944, 4,000 people died and 5,000 were wounded on the beaches of Normandy. by the end of the day 326,000 troops had landed, as well as 50,000 vehicles and 100,000 tons of equipment. Do you realize that WWII is the last war that America won? It is. This is the day in 1968 that we lost Robert F. Kennedy. Robert said, “There are those that look at things the way they are and ask Why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” And, “It is the essence of responsibility to put the public good ahead of personal gain.” Next is the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung who died in 1961. Carl said, “You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.” and “Everyone you meet knows something you don’t know but need to know. Learn from them.” Last today is J. Paul Getty who stopped making money in 1976. J. Paul said, “A man can fail, but he isn’t a failure until he blames someone else” and, “The employer generally gets the employees he deserves.” Abide.
